# Michael Schumacher's top five F1 controversies
## Formula One has never been short on controversy, but one man seemed to
court it more than most. Here we look at Michael Schumacher's most unedifying
moments.

**1. Australian GP 1994 - Michael Schumacher v Damon Hill**
The 1997 season had gone down to the final race in Adelaide, with [**Michael
Schumacher**][3] and Damon Hill separated by just one point. Both drivers were
seeking their first F1 crown, but it was the German who won after both drivers
were forced to retire when, on lap 36, Schumacher's car struck Hill's as the
Englishman was trying to overtake. The jury is still out on whether it was
done deliberately.

**2. Spanish GP 1997 - Michael Schumacher v Jacques Villeneuve**
Michael Schumacher had got away with it three years earlier on Hill, and he
tried the same trick against Jacques Villeneuve in Jerez. Again, the German
went into the final race with a one-point lead. On lap 46, Villeneuve was
flying and attempted to pass Schumacher on the inside when the German turned
into him. However, it was the Ferrari that came off worse.

On a rain-soaked track and Schumacher dominating the race, the German came up
to lap David Coulthard on lap 25. The McLaren driver kept to the side to allow
Schumacher to pass, but, due to the amount of spray, the German was blinded
and ploughed straight into the back of the Scot. When both cars pitted,
Schumacher stormed round to the McLaren garage determined to square up to
Coulthard, which nearly resulted in a fist fight.

**4. Austrian GP 2002 - Michael Schumacher v Rubens Barrichello**
The day sporting behaviour in F1 died. Despite leading the race and on course
for victory, Ferrari No 2 Rubens Barrichello was [ordered to slow down and
allow Schumacher to pass on the final straight][12], thereby gifting the
German the race and the world title. Barrichello, Schumacher and Ferrari were
subsequently fined £1 million and "team-orders" were officially banned.

Whether it was deliberate or simply driver error, Schumacher's reputation was
hardly enhanced during qualifying. With title rival Fernando Alonso on a
flying lap and likely to claim pole position, [the German 'parked' his car at
the penultimate corner][14], bringing out the yellow flags, and guaranteeing
him pole position. However, after qualifying the German was stripped of pole
and forced to start the race at the back of the grid.
