# Mercedes improve car for Michael Schumacher as Spanish Grand Prix looms
|
|
|
|
## Michael Schumacher will be driving a radically revamped Mercedes in
|
|
Barcelona next week as he seeks to get back up to speed following three years
|
|
on the sidelines.

To general dismay, and no little amusement in some quarters, the seven-time
|
|
world champion has been out-qualified and out-performed by team-mate Nico
|
|
Rosberg in all four races so far this term and already trails his younger
|
|
compatriot by 40 points in the championship.
|
|
|
|
Naturally, questions are being asked regarding the wisdom of the 41 year-old's
|
|
comeback with more than 60 per cent of respondents in a recent poll in Germany
|
|
admitting they thought it was a mistake.
|
|
|
|
Following Schumacher's disappointing 10th place in Shanghai at the Chinese
|
|
Grand Prix, Mercedes claimed there may have been something wrong with his car
|
|
and pleaded for more time before rushing to judge him.
|
|
|
|
Team principal Ross Brawn has revealed that as well a raft of aerodynamic
|
|
updates, including a longer wheelbase to help generate more of the front-end
|
|
downforce that Schumacher prefers, the German will be using a different
|
|
chassis.
|
|
|
|
"It's not a new chassis per se, it's a chassis we used in testing," Brawn
|
|
said.

"The one he had got damaged during the first few races and we repaired it as
|
|
best we could at the races. But now we are back at base we are going to re-
|
|
introduce the test chassis and he will be using that in Barcelona."
|
|
|
|
Barcelona is being depicted as a make-or-break race as far as the veteran
|
|
German is concerned.
|
|
|
|
Meanwhile, McLaren have gently criticised the sport's governing body, the FIA,
|
|
for seemingly wasting their time over a recent ruling on active ride-height
|
|
controls.
|
|
|
|
The Woking-based team began development on a device similar to the one they
|
|
believed Red Bull were employing, only to be told that it was illegal.
|
|
|
|
"It would have been nice if we had had a clear no at the outset but we
|
|
didn't," team principal Martin Whitmarsh said.
