# Formula One 2011: world champion Sebastian Vettel signs contract extension
|
|
at Red Bull until 2014
|
|
|
|
## Sebastian Vettel has agreed a new deal which will keep him at Red Bull
|
|
until the end of 2014.

And unlike Lewis Hamilton, who on Monday announced his decision to sign with
|
|
Simon Fuller's global management agency XIX Entertainment, it emerged that the
|
|
man who replaced him as Formula One's youngest world champion had negotiated
|
|
the terms of his contract extension.
|
|
|
|
It was an approach which his team principal, Christian Horner, described as
|
|
"refreshing".
|
|
|
|
"It's very rare for someone who is so young to be so in control of his own
|
|
destiny," Horner said before comparing Vettel's approach to Hamilton's. "It's
|
|
very refreshing that he doesn't have a big management group telling him what
|
|
to do or where to do it.
|
|
|
|
"Sebastian is very protective of his time. He is not interested in, for want
|
|
of a better word, 'profiling' or anything like that. He is very focused on
|
|
being a racing driver and is protective of his time to train and prepare for
|
|
grands prix. That works for him. Obviously Lewis has chosen to go a different
|
|
route.
|
|
|
|
"With the demands he has placed on himself that will work for him. No two
|
|
drivers are the same. It is whatever suits the individual concerned. With
|
|
Sebastian it has been very straightforward."

Vettel, who claimed the title at the final race in Abu Dhabi last year, is
|
|
believed to be earning around €12million (£10.4million) per year under his new
|
|
contract, up from €10million.
|
|
|
|
Horner said the extension was "never in doubt" but added that it was a relief
|
|
to tie it up before the start of the new season. There had been speculation
|
|
over the winter that Ferrari or Mercedes might make a move for the 23 year-
|
|
old.
|
|
|
|
"I'm sure he had loads of approaches and inquiries but he didn't take any of
|
|
them seriously," Horner said. "That's one of the reasons we were keen to get
|
|
this finalised at the start of the year; to avoid speculation. His future is
|
|
with Red Bull for the foreseeable future.
|
|
|
|
"This is a clear commitment from Red Bull to run at the front with the likes
|
|
of Ferrari and McLaren."
|
|
|
|
Horner added that chief technical officer Adrian Newey, credited with being
|
|
the brains behind Red Bull's rise from newbies to champions in six years, had
|
|
also signed a new deal.
|
|
|
|
"Hopefully Red Bull will be the last team that he works for in Formula One,"
|
|
Horner said. "I think a contract with Adrian is largely irrelevant - I don't
|
|
think he's actually read one yet.
|
|
|
|
"It is a big commitment, but there are no signs of his passion and enthusiasm
|
|
for the sport waning. Hopefully that can go on for many years, even beyond
|
|
what a piece of paper says."
