# Dinosaurs had mohawks and freckles
## Dinosaurs were not all ginger after all - some had a rusty brown mohawk
and freckles, scientists have discovered.

Researchers claimed last month that they could conclusively reveal for the
first time the true colour of feathered dinosaurs that walked the earth more
than 100 million years ago. It was "russet and orange".
But now another study has come up with even more exciting news - others had
"rufous" or reddy brown plumage.
The scientists at Yale University revealed their discovery in the journal
Science and created an illustration of how the dinosaur would have looked
using microscopic clues from a fossil found in China.
It features a reddish brown, Mohawk like, crest and freckles.
The research not only adds to the previous revelation that some had ginger
feathers but also further helps to dispel the image of them being grey and
scaly.
Researchers found a compound called melanomas which imparts colour in animals
in a fossil of the Anchiornis huxleyi, a four-winged troodontid dinosaur that
lived 150 million years ago during the late Jurassic period in China.
This allowed scientists to piece together the colour pattern right down to
individual feathers.
Professor Richard Prum said: "This was no crow or sparrow but a creature with
a very notable plumage.
"This would be a very striking animal if it was alive today.
"The patterns on the limbs probably functioned in communication and may have
helped the dinosaur to attract mates."
