in Croatia.

Prices are for a double room including breakfast, unless otherwise stated.
Note that although Croatia's official currency is the kuna (Kn), hotel prices
are often posted in euro (€). At the time of publication there were 8.10
Croatian kunas to one British pound.
### 1. Pu?i? Palace
Still charming despite its outrageous prices, this boutique hotel occupies an
18th-century Baroque palace in the old town. The 19 double rooms have polished
oak parquet floors, wooden beamed ceilings, period antiques and Italian mosaic
tiled bathrooms stocked with Bulgari toiletries. The hotel restaurant serves
East Mediterranean fusion cuisine on a first-floor terrace lined with potted
lemon trees. There's even a private chapel if you're thinking of getting
married.

**2. Hotel Bellevue **
Built into a cliff face overlooking the sea, a 15-min walk from the old town,
this hip design hotel reopened in autumn 2006 following a total makeover. The
81 sea-view rooms all have wooden floors, chic minimalist furnishing, fabrics
in creams and beiges, and bathrooms stocked with Gharani Štrok toiletries
(Vanya's father, Goran Štrok, owns the Bellevue). A glass lift whizzes guests
down to the Comfort Zone Spa Centre complete with an indoor pool, and to a
small private pebble beach lined with sun beds and umbrellas.

**3. Hotel Stari Grad **
Close to Pile Gate in the old town, this is one of only two hotels within
Dubrovnik's medieval walls. Besides its fabulous location, its best feature is
a delightful top floor terrace overlooking the surrounding terracotta roofs,
where a good and plentiful breakfast is served on sunny mornings. The eight
rooms are furnished with reproduction antiques.

**4. Berkeley Hotel **
In a side street opposite Gruž harbour, 3km northwest of the old town, this
friendly family-run apart-hotel opened in 2007. As of Dec 2008 it will offer
16 studios and spacious suites, plus eight new double rooms, all with wooden
floors, modern minimalist furnishing, flat screen Sat-TV and internet. The
studios and suites also have kitchenettes. The ground floor restaurant serves
a delicious cooked-to-order breakfast, plus dinner (residents only) with an
unusual 'bring your own bottle' policy.

**5. Amoret Apartments **
If you want to stay in the old town, but the two hotels there are outside your
budget, consider private accommodation. Amoret has eight two-person apartments
in two narrow side streets off Placa. Expect wooden parquet flooring and
antique furniture, your own kitchenette, plus mod cons such as a/c, Sat-TV and
Wi-Fi. You'll also get a washing line so you can hang your clothes out the
window, just like the locals do.
