Meal prices are per person, based on three courses with wine. At the time of
publication there were 8.10 Croatian kunas to one British pound.
### 1. Orhan
In a stunning location just outside Pile Gate, you'll find Orhan's delightful
waterside terrace at the foot of the floodlit Lovrijenac Fortress. Seafood
lovers might opt for the fish platter for two, which varies daily depending on
the morning's catch, while carnivores will relish the pe?ena teletina (roast
veal).

### 2. Tovjerna Sesame
A 10-min walk from the old town, Sesame occupies a 19th-century house
furnished with antiques and a charming raised terrace. Offering a slightly
more varied menu than most Dubrovnik restaurants, you can expect goodies such
as tagliatelle with truffles, fresh lobster, barbecued steaks, and colourful
seasonal salads.

### 3. Lokanda Peskarija
Overlooking the old harbour, this tremendously popular seafood eatery is known
for its excellent salata od hobotnica (octopus salad) and rižot od morskih
plodova (shellfish risotto). Waiters in blue-and-white striped sailor shirts
ply dishes between the stonewalled candlelit dining room and the waterside
terrace lined with big white umbrellas.

### 4. Dundo Maroje
Patronised by locals and visitors alike, this konoba (tavern) lies hidden away
in a narrow side street off Placa. Diners begin with complimentary riblja
pašteta (fish pate), then feast on Dalmatian specialities such as dagnje na
buzaru (mussels in white wine and garlic), crni rižot (black risotto made from
cuttlefish ink) and škampi na žaru (grilled shrimps).

### 5. Kamenica
This informal, family-run eatery serves generous platters of girice (small
fried fish, similar to whitebait) and pržene lignje (fried squid) at outdoor
tables overlooking the open-air market. If you want a desert there's no
choice, just one standard dish, rožata, a Dubrovnik speciality similar to
creme caramel.

Daily 8am-midnight (May-Oct); 8am-10.30pm (Nov-Apr)

### Bars and cafes
For morning coffee or an after-dinner nightcap try Gradska Kavana (Pred Dvorom
1, 00 385 20 321202; [www.mea-culpa.hr)][7] occupying an elegant double height
space with wooden parquet floors, brass balustrades and chandeliers, and a
lovely terrace out front looking down Placa.
Jazz and rock enthusiasts should head for the mythical Troubadour Hard Jazz
Cafe (Buni?eva Poljana 2; 00 305 20 323476), run by the Van Bloemen family who
founded the Troubadour in Earl's Court, London, in 1954, then sold it in 1970
and moved to Dubrovnik.
However, many people's favourite remains tiny informal Buža (Od Margarite; 00
385 91 5894936) on the rocks overlooking the sea, just outside the city walls.
Drinks are served in plastic cups at candlelit tables into the early hours.
### Nightlife
A chichi beach club by day, **East-West** (Frana Supila bb; 00 385 20 412220;
[www.ew-dubrovnik.com)][8] transforms into a bar-restaurant and club come
sunset, with a rooftop open-air lounge serving cocktails till daybreak.
Celebrity visitors spotted here include British footballer Rio Ferdinand and
US actress Tara Reid. You'll find it on Banje beach, just outside the old
town. Summer only.
Equally ostentatious, **Gils Pop Lounge** (Svetog Dominika bb; 00 385 20
322221; [www.gilsdubrovnik.com)][9] is an open-air summer venue on a raised
terrace within the city walls, affording fantastic view over the old harbour.
Think white leather sofas, pink and purple scatter cushions and beanbags,
cocktails, finger food and funky music. The adjoining restaurant serves French
fusion cuisine at exorbitant prices. Summer only.
For a more laid back night scene, try **Lazareti** (Frana Supila 8; 00 385 20
324633), just outside the city walls, near Plo?e Gate. Occupying the 16th-
century quarantine buildings, Lazareti hosts art exhibitions and art workshops
during the day, then functions as an alternative club after dark. Electronica
predominates, and they also stage concerts and rave parties attracting
international DJ's. Open all year.
### **Shopping **
For most visitors, the most memorable shopping experience is a browse round
the open-air market (Gunduli?eva Poljana; mornings only) in the old town, with
stalls laden with seasonal fruit and vegetables plus locally produced cheeses
and dried lavender.
**Algoritam **(Placa 8; 00 385 20 322044) is the best place to track down
English-language novels and guide books.
**Jewellery Gallery Djardin **(Miha Pracata 8; 00 385 20 324744; [www.cro-art-
design.com)][10] is set in a lovely courtyard garden in the old town, and
stocks slightly eccentric one-off necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings
made by two local jewellery designers.
**Boutique Croata **(Pred Dvorom 2, 020 323526, [www.croata.hr),][11] stocks
silk ties in presentation boxes, complete with a short 'History of the Tie'
explaining that it originated in Croatia in the 17th century.
**Dubrova?ka Ku?a **(Svetog Dominika 2; 00 385 20 322092; [www.dubrovacka-
kuca.com)][12] occupies the medieval St Dominik's tower, and displays Croatian
wines, rakija, olive oil and honey on the ground floor, plus paintings by
local artists on the two upper levels.
