# Inflation: Telegraph calculates real rise in cost of living
|

## As economists argue about the relative merits of the two official measures

of inflation, the CPI and the RPI, The Telegraph's Real Cost of Living Index

|
(RCLI) attempts to gauge the true rise in the cost of living.

The RCLI includes prices for all the items shown in **[the table][3]** -

including petrol and diesel, mortgage and council tax, which are excluded from
|
|
the CPI, the Government's preferred measure of inflation.

The index is calculated exclusively for The Telegraph by mysupermarket.com and
|
|
moneysupermarket.com, the comparison services.
