## The death of Osama bin Laden has sparked the predictable round of
conspiracy theories involving the royal family, the veracity of his death and
political grandstanding.

Yesterday, the internet was abuzz with rumours, counter rumours and
allegations about the [al-Qaeda][5] mastermind's death.
Among those being touted was the claim that the newly married Duke and Duchess
of Cambridge delayed their honeymoon after a tip-off about the planned US
strike from White House officials.
The couple were believed to have been destined for Jordan after their [royal
wedding][6], but postponed the overseas break by at least a month.
For all the talk of the reasons for their delay, there were counter claims
that the US had to delay the bin Laden announcement due to the royal wedding.
Theorists claimed that bin Laden could have been killed as early as Friday but
no notification was given until late on Sunday evening in order for the two
events not to clash.

Other conspiracy theorists claimed that the terrorist hadn't been killed at
all, but his death was announced to give US President [Barack Obama][13] a
much needed boost in the polls.
His death occurred eight years to the day after then US President George W
Bush declared "mission accomplished" following intervention in Afghanistan and
Iraq.
The coincidental timing of bin Laden's elimination is seen by some as just a
little too convenient.
Another theory being aired was that bin Laden was killed several years ago in
the Tora Bora mountains in [Afghanistan][14] but had been kept "alive" to
encourage support for the war on terror.
The theory goes that it is the US which has been releasing videos of a fake
bin Laden in recent years to keep the world convinced.
This line of thinking returns corresponds with the belief that 9/11 was
actually implemented by Americans to justify wars abroad, distracting from the
domestic political agenda.
