A suicide attack against a military target, cutting down the young recruits
who would soon have been sent to wage war on **[Pakistan's][2]** militant
threat, is the sort of thing the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has been
doing week in week out for years.
But coming less than a fortnight after the death of Osama bin Laden, the
message was clear: We haven't gone away.
The treasure trove of intelligence collected by the Navy Seal team has led
some analysts to suggest the **[al-Qaeda][3]** leader was a micromanager,
poring over plans and picking targets.
Without his charismatic leadership, maybe al-Qaeda would struggle to continue
its bloody campaign.
Friday's attack in north-west Pakistan suggests otherwise. His diffuse network
of followers - among them the deadly nexus of terror groups headquartered in
North and South Waziristan - needs no such direction from the top.

The twin blasts have put an already jittery nation on the edge.
At the same time, leaders of the TTP intent on bringing down the state will
know there is no better time to strike at Pakistan's military.
Its powerful aura has evaporated since failing to spot US helicopters crossing
the Afghan border en route to bin Laden's lair in Abbottabad.
For years the world's most wanted man had lived right under their noses.
Cock-up or conspiracy, the two glaring lapses have heaped pressure on the
generals and on the civilian government.
And for terrorists committed to sowing fear and showing Pakistanis the cost of
their country's alliance with America, there is no better time for a fresh
wave of killing.
