[**Bin Laden**][2], a mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York
and Washington, died in a May 2 raid on his [**Pakistan**][3] compound by a
team of U.S. SEALs who seized what U.S. officials describe as a treasure trove
of intelligence material.
Authorities are now trying to piece together vital elements of the al Qaeda
leader's life, including how he came to live in the northern Pakistan garrison
town of Abbottabad and who he met with before his death.
"The U.S. has questioned bin Laden's widows, but they're not particularly
forthcoming yet," a U.S. official with knowledge of the investigation said on
condition of anonymity.
Pentagon spokesman Col. David Lapan confirmed that U.S. government
representatives had been able to question the wives. He declined to specify
what agency the U.S. government officials represented or to offer any details
of the meeting.
U.S. authorities are working with Pakistani officials to gain additional
access to the women.
