# Gaza flotilla attack: UN secretary general demands blockade be lifted
## Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, has demanded that Israel lift its
blockade of the Gaza Strip immediately in the wake of the deadly raid on the
aid flotilla.

Speaking on his return from visits to Brazil, Malawi and Uganda, Mr Ban said
the underlying problem behind Monday's events was the long-running, crippling
Israeli siege of Gaza which he described as "counter-productive, unsustainable
and wrong."
His comments came after Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was
vital for security that the blockade stayed in place.
He lambasted world leaders for criticising the ships' takeover, accusing some
of holding Israel to what he called a double standard and questioning its
right to defence.
"Once again, Israel faces hypocrisy and a biased rush to judgment," Mr
Netanyahu said as he defended the actions of Israeli marines who, he said,
fired in self-defence against Turks wielding sticks and knives on the cruise
liner Mavi Marmara.
"The international community cannot afford an Iranian port on the
Mediterranean ... The same countries that are criticising us today, should
know that they could be targeted tomorrow."

William Hague, the foreign secretary, said leaders in Britain and the US were
discussing what might be done to ease the pain of the blockade on ordinary
Gazans, telling parliament it had created an "unacceptable and unsustainable
situation".
An opinion poll in Israel's Maariv newspaper showed that more than 60 per cent
of Israelis believed the interception was flawed operationally. But few
question the Gaza blockade.
