# Going the extra 107 miles
## When the photographer Will Sanders was given the chance to drive a new
Audi A6 on a 107-mile journey around East Anglia, he wasn't quite sure what to
expect. Here, he tells the story of eco lodges, windfarms and some rather
tasty pigs…

Embarrassingly, I haven't seen that much of England. I live in London, and
have done loads of road trips taking photographs - but have spent lots of time
in America and Peru, and I have recently got back from Mexico where I am doing
a project on the Day of the Dead.
I had not thought about getting away to another part of this country before,
but when I was given the chance take a 107-mile trip in a new Audi A6 (the new
engine delivers an additional 107 miles per tank*) there was no excuse not to
go out driving here and see what hidden gems I might come across.
I set out in the A6 after spending the night in one of the Fritton Lake
Lodges, a cluster of modern American-looking cabins hidden deep in the
woodland (all bright-orange leaves right now). Despite the slippery
conditions, the responsive handling of the A6 held up exceptionally well, and
it was easy to find the nearby point where Suffolk turns into Norfolk;
incredibly there's a clear place on the road at the border where the tarmac
actually changes if you look hard enough. Just north of there, through the sea
mists that hang around the coast, I came across Great Yarmouth and Caister
Golf Club. It's a traditional club next to a racecourse, and turns out to be
the place where the term 'bogey' was born in 1890, taken from a music-hall
song that was a hit at the time. There were some lovely characters out playing
a round, happy to have their photo taken and hear about my journey, as well as
giving me suggestions of places to stop on my travels. (They even allowed me
to take a photograph of the Audi on the course.)
Driving on up the B1159 along the coast, I spotted a cool-looking windfarm, a
towering group of 10 turbines at the pretty village of West Somerton. Some
people grumble about windfarms, but I think sometimes they can make a place
look better. These were asking to be photographed.
Taking the A6 inland, with a bit of a hunger developing, I made what would be
one of my favourite and best-timed discoveries: Bray's Cottage Pork Pies,
which are produced from a farm run by two lovely women, Nell and Sarah. They
raise their pigs to roam and socialise freely, and then make them into
amazingly good pork pies. The area around Holt revealed itself to be a bit of
a gastronomic hotspot, as not far from there is Morston Hall, the only
restaurant within 50 miles to have a Michelin star, with a brilliant head
chef, Richard Bainbridge. It's a properly beautiful place too, with the
restaurant attached to a flint-covered country house. Carrying on parallel to
the north Norfolk coast, driving on through Wells-next-the-Sea, I found myself
at the astounding Holkham Hall, a massive Palladian mansion. It's set in
gorgeous parkland by the coast - some scenes of the film The Duchess, with
Keira Knightley, were shot there.
After the grandeur of Holkham, I drove into a gem of a town - Burnham Market
is fantastic, full of independent shops and traders. Its little galleries and
cool shops reminded me of Santa Fe in New Mexico. You got a strong feeling
that the owners really care about their shops - I came across a great butcher,
a lovely deli. It had a brilliant atmosphere - it would be great to go and
shop there in the run-up to Christmas. With the sun setting, I jumped back
into the A6 and it struck me just how comfortable my journey had been.
Relaxed, I turned the engine on, and made it to the end of my trip at King's
Lynn just after dark. You can see more of Will Sanders's photographs from his
