respectively.

It is the fifth time the team have taken the prestigious trophy, having
previously won in 1996, 1997 and 1998. This latest victory is particularly
impressive as it comes after a difficult season for the team, who were forced
to make several modifications to last year's winning SEAT Leon TDI to meet new
regulation changes.
To make things even harder for SEAT, both Tarquini and Muller being involved
in a serious crash during qualifying for the Macau races. The two drivers were
taken to hospital after the incident, but recovered in time for Sunday's
races.
With the victory Tarquini became, at 47, the oldest world champion in the
history of FIA-accredited motorsport, beating the record set by Juan Manuel
Fangio when he won the 1957 Formula One championship at 46.
The veteran Italian's success came despite finishing second and sixth in the
Macau legs. He thanked the "extraordinary" efforts of the SEAT team for making
his victory possible, saying: "It is amazing to clinch the title after such a
long sports career.

"I started the weekend with some trouble, but I was able to recover, and the
extraordinary work of my mechanics made it possible for me to take part in a
race that meant a unique opportunity which I simply could not miss.
"It's been a very hard championship, very intense, and in order to win ahead
of two rivals who are as strong as Yvan Muller and Augusto Farfus it has been
essential to score many points in all races."
SEAT's sporting director, Jaime Puig, agreed, praising the work of the drivers
and the whole team: "Winning two championships for the second year in a row is
the reward for a fantastic year, and I want to thank the whole team for their
effort, their great capacity for work and their solidarity.
"The races in Macau have shown that we are a team in which everybody works for
everybody.
"After the two championships achieved last year, we wanted to take at least
one of the titles this year, and we took them both. It's been an extraordinary
result."
SEAT's remarkable day was improved by SUNRED Engineering's Tom Coronel, who
took the Independents' Trophy driving a SEAT Leon 2.0 TFSI.
**Now road drivers will be able to experience the power of the SEAT World
Touring Car Championship, with the Leon Cupra R about to go on sale. At 265
horsepower the Cupra R is SEAT's most powerful production car ever. And the
SEAT Leon FR TDI, already available, can unleash 170 horsepower, but emits a
relatively tiny 139 grammes of carbon dioxide per kilometre.**
