SEAT's second consecutive victory in the World Touring Car Championships was a
testament to the skill of the team's engineers and the robust SEAT Leon Cupra
TDi.

Gabriele Tarquini and his teammate Yvan Muller, who came first and second in
the drivers' trophy respectively, did so despite several changes to the
technical specifications to the competition and a serious crash during
qualification for the last races at Macau.
But the Spanish team's engineers were able to overcome every obstacle. The
back-to-back victories in 2008 and 2009 gave SEAT their fifth manufacturers'
trophy, following wins in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
The sport's governing body, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile
(FIA), ordered SEAT's engineers to reduce the pressure in their Turbocharged
Direct injection (TDi) system, severely limiting the cars' speed.
At times during the competition, even the drivers were unsure that the team's
mechanics were up to the task of providing a winning car under such
restrictions.

"The FIA reduced our performance, and there is nothing else we can do. This is
our level right now and [therefore] I'm happy to be leading the standings,"
said Tarquini after the race in Oschersleben, Germany, when the new rules led
to BMW closing the gap on SEAT to a single point.
But despite Tarquini's concerns, he was to win the next race in Imola, Italy,
with team-mate Muller coming second - and in the second race there was another
SEAT one-two, this time with Muller taking the flag.
The engineers worked another miracle after the two drivers were taken to
hospital after a crash during qualifying in Macau.
Both cars were badly knocked about in the collision, but the solidly built
SEAT Leon Cupras were swiftly repaired in time for the race less than 48 hours
later.
Tarquini praised the efforts of the mechanics as "extraordinary" in getting
the cars back on the track so quickly. SEAT's sporting director Jaime Puig
agreed, saying that the result showed that "we are a team in which everybody
works for everybody."
In 2008, the Leon TDi became the first car in any FIA-sanctioned motorsport to
win using a diesel engine. Repeating the feat in the face of so many obstacles
is surely an even greater accomplishment for the team.
The SEAT clean sweep didn't finish there: Tom Coronel also took the
Independents' Trophy for the SUNRED Engineering team in a SEAT Leon WTCC.
**Now road drivers will be able to experience the power of the SEAT World
Touring Car Championship, with the Leon Cupra R about to go on sale. At 265
horsepower the Cupra R is SEAT's most powerful production car ever. And the
SEAT Leon FR TDI, already available, can unleash 170 horsepower, but emits a
relatively tiny 139 grammes of carbon dioxide per kilometre.**
