# UK video game chart 16 May 2011
## UK game sales chart: the multiformat top 10 best selling video games in
the UK. Data supplied by UKIE.
![Brink hands-on preview][1]
The tree-huggers were right: The world of Brink sees the earth flooded through
global-warming and mankind surviving in floating cities

[Comments][2]
In a terrific result for UK developer Splash Damage, their excellent online
multiplayer FPS Brink hits the top spot at the first time of asking. Brink had
to fight off solid competition from Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, riding the
publicity wave of new film On Stranger Tides. Call of Duty Black Ops ontinues
to perform well, no doubt boosted by the release of the Escalation map pack.
Rounding off the top ten, EA's sci-fi shooter Crysis 2 makes the leap from
16th to 9th, while off-road racer MX vs ATV Alive has en excellent finish at
10.
**1. [Brink][3]** **(new entry) **
Brink may have had a few teething problems at launch, but that hasn't stopped
this fast, exhilarating multiplayer shooter from making a huge splash in the
UK charts. A superb, involving example of team-based play, Brink may have the
odd annoying quirk but it's already gaining a die-hard fanbase, and deservedly
so. Truly one of the most original, interesting multiplayer games in a long
while.

**2. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean (new entry) **
Captain Jack Sparrow gets the block treatment in this latest Lego lampooning.
After the large scale battles of Lego Star Wars III, Lego Pirates is a return
to the more traditional Lego formula with plenty of treasure to find, things
to smash and studs to collect. Traveller's Tale have a lot of fun with the
source material, their hilariously brilliant portrayal of Johnny Depp's
Sparrow a particular highlight. And with the most polished engine the series
has seen, those golden studs have never sparkled so brightly.

**3. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (▼1) **
The Latin Dance craze shimmies its way onto Wii and Xbox Kinect in this
fitness workout. Kinect players must match the dancer's movement on screen,
while the Wii version comes equipped with a special belt to attach the Wii
remote to in order for the game to recognise your moves. Should appease fans
of Just Dance who want to add a little more latino to their party.
[**Buy Zumba Fitness (Amazon UK)**][6]
**4. [Portal 2][7] (▼2)**
Portal 2 is a masterful creation from Half-Life creators Valve, combining
exquisite design and brilliant storytelling to create a bona fide masterpiece.
Portal 2 pits you as Chell, attempting to escape the clutches of deranged AI
GLaDOS. Using the portal gun to solve the test chambers that GLaDOS challenges
you with is superb, mind-bending fun, Valve constantly throwing new ideas in
the mix. Portal 2 is constantly funny too, with sharp turns from Ellen MacLain
as GLaDOS and Stephen Merchant as your sidekick Wheatley. Add in a brilliant
co-op mode, and Portal 2 has all the ingredients for videogaming at its very
best.

**5. [Call of Duty: Black Ops][9] (▼4) **
Bolstered, no doubt, by what analysts are called the world's biggest
entertainment launch, Call Of Duty: Black Ops was bound to be a huge seller
based on the power of its brand alone. The fact that it's actually a great
game into the bargain almost feels like icing. Players have a campaign mode to
blaze through, which while short, is far better written and more engrossing
that those of any of Black Ops's predecessors. However, the multiplayer is
what most punters stumped up their cash for, and in this area, Black Ops
doesn't disappoint. Aside from lengthy list of match types, perks, maps,
weapons and huge levels of customisation available, Black Ops boasts its own
currency system (COD Points - CP), new Wager Matches - in which players can
bet their CP against all comers - and Combat Training, an introduction to the
multiplayer experience for players who always found the online arena too
intimidating. Top that off with some of the best shooter action available and
Black Ops earns its status in a walk as one of the best releases of 2010.

UK)**
**6. [Mortal Kombat][11] (▼3)**
This is officially the ninth entry in to the infamously gory brawler, but
tries to recapture the rebellious nature of the original 1992 arcade hit by
going back to its roots. It succeeds terrifically. It might not be the most
precise or balanced fighter around, but provides a satisfying, hyper-violent
game with a pervasive sense of fun. It never takes itself too seriously,
despite the lashings of blood and return of the gruesome 'Fatality' finishing
moves, and allows developer Netherrealm to pile on the modes and events,
including a daftly enjoyable story mode. Recommended, but be warned, it earns
every inch of its 18 rating.

**7. [Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars][13]** **(▼5)**
The delightful Lego formula undergoes a few tweaks in the third Star Wars
themed title. Based on the cartoon series set in between Episodes II and III
in Star Wars canon, The Clone Wars serves up the most polished visuals and
combat of the series. It even introduces a light helping of real-time-
strategy, as you control the Republic forces in chaotically pitched, sprawling
battles. But the heart of the game remains, with wonderful humour, and the
intoxicating feeling of there always being something to build, play with, or
just plain smash to bits. Still the go to series for children-parent co-op
gaming, the little plastic figures show no evidence of losing their shine.

Wars][14] (Amazon UK)**
**8. [FIFA 11][15] (▼6) **
The engine has been tweaked and polished to give the on-pitch action a greater
sense of realism; ball physics are far better, ping pong passing has been
eliminated and players look and act more like their real-world counterparts.
With smooth online play which allows for 11 versus 11 player matches, a
condensed player and manager mode (which thankfully isn't broken) and gameplay
that hits the sweet-spot between reality and fantasy, Fifa 11 is arguably the
best football sim on the market.

**9. [Crysis 2][17]** **(▲16)**
Crytek's technically astonishing FPS series returns, and this time it's on
consoles too. Climbing into the game's trademark nanosuit is as beguiling as
ever, offering players varying tactics to take on the nefarious CELL soldiers
and invading alien force. However, Crysis 2 is a little more linear than its
forebears, taking cues from the scripted bombast of Call of Duty. Set in an
immaculately realised New York under siege from an intergalactic threat,
Crysis 2 is a thrilling, if familiar, rollercoaster ride.

**10. MX vs ATV Alive (new entry) **
The latest entry in THQ's off-road racing series is most notable for its
experimental pricing structure, with the boxed product coming in at a low
price to be supplemented by paid DLC. It will be interesting to see how the
scheme pays off. Either way MX vs ATV Alive** **should provide off-road fans
with the same enjoyable trick-based racing the series is known for.
