Polish your glass slippers, buff up the carriage, Disney is set to make - yet
another - version of the ubiquitous rags-to-riches story, Cinderella.
Disney has reportedly shelled out a seven-figure sum for a new live-action
version of the classic fairy tale scripted by Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote
_27 Dresses_ and _The Devil Wears Prada_.
Although the prospect of a Disney princess, in flesh and blood rather than
pencilled, is undeniably thrilling, it does raise the question - who on earth
would be willing, and able, to take up the mantle of playing this most famous
of fairy-tale roles?
There have, of course, been multiple Hollywood versions of the girl who is
transformed from maid to princess thanks to the appearance of a fairy
godmother and the fortuitous loss of an impractically designed shoe. Drew
Barrymore injected some feisty femininity into the role in _Ever After_ and
Julia Stiles bagged her aristocrat in _The Prince and Me_.
As well as the obviously Cinderella-esque protagonists, there are countless
other cinematic heroines that reference Cinders. _Pretty Woman_ even had her
as a hooke, and there were elements of the story in the dreadful _Maid in
Manhattan_ and _27 Dresses_ with Katherine Heigl playing the put-upon Jane was
littered with Cinderella allusions - perhaps no surprise then that Brosh
McKenna is returning to the story.
But if Disney is sticking to the original tale, who could carry the weight of
beauty, graciousness - and expectation - as Cinderella herself?
As one online voice put it yesterday: "Disney, we implore you, don't pick
Miley Cyrus". I'll second that. But, after that cage performance on _Dancing
with the Stars_, I'm not so sure she's looking for such a squeaky clean role
anyway.
Would Amanda Seyfried step up the to the plate? Although perhaps a little
older than Cinderella, she has the romantic film pedigree. But, after her role
as escort Chloe in the film of the same name, audiences might have trouble
reconciling an actress who played a call girl with our Cinders. Or could
Dianna Agron make the jump from _Glee_ - where she plays fallen cheerleader
Quinn Fabray - to Disney's golden girl?
The most magical, but perhaps the most far-fetched, option would be Scarlett
Johansson. Annie Leibovitz shot the _Iron Man 2_ star as Cinderella for a
Disney publicity shot in 2007 and floating down the palace steps in that blue
ballgown, she looks surprisingly right.
The Mouse House is - for now - keeping schtum on casting, format and exactly
how the story will unfold. Until then, we'll have to keep hoping that our
modern-day Cinderella is someone worthy of the glass slipper rather than a
right pumpkin.
