# Neighbour who ran over John Gotti's son was dissolved in acid
## A neighbour who accidentally ran over and killed the young son of the
Mafia boss John Gotti was shot dead and his body dissolved in a barrel of
acid, court papers have revealed.

Federal prosecutors in a racketeering trial in Brooklyn, New York, say the
outraged chief of the Gambino crime family ordered Charles Carneglia, a Mob
hitman, to avenge the boy's death in 1980.
According to a 44-page evidence motion, Carneglia shot dead John Favara and
told an informant that acid was "the best method to use to avoid detection".
The fate of Mr Favara, a 51-year-old furniture warehouse worker who
disappeared five months after the crash, has remained the most prominent
unsolved mystery from the bloody career of Gotti, the so-called Dapper Don who
died in prison in 2002.
Mr Favara was unfortunate enough to be driving home in the Howard Beach
neighbourhood of Queens, New York, when 12-year-old Frank Gotti darted in
front of his car on a mini motorbike.
The driver told police he was momentarily blinded by the sun and didn't see
the boy.

Investigators ruled the crash an accident but Mr Favara was subjected to death
threats and harassment for months, including having "murderer" spray-painted
across his car.
The Gottis were crushed by their son's death. Victoria Gotti, the boy's
mother, would reportedly walk out to the local baseball fields late at night
in the hope she would find her son alive.
When Mr Favara tried to apologise to her, she attacked him with a baseball
bat. He ignored advice to move away only to disappear after leaving work one
day.
The Gottis proved to police they were in Florida at the time and no arrests
were ever made. The police were reportedly later told that Gotti dismembered
Mr Favara himself with a chainsaw when he returned from Florida.
Investigators now believe Mr Favara was forced into a van and shot in the legs
before being taken to Brooklyn. There, they believe, he was killed and later
pushed into a 55-gallon, cement-bottomed oil drum which was then dumped into
the sea.
Gotti, who was only a captain in the Gambino family at the time, has provided
New York with one of the city's most lurid Mafia careers.
Flamboyant and outspoken in public but brutal and quick-tempered in private,
he reportedly beat his wife and elder son regularly.
During the late 1980s he was rumoured to be earning $1 million a month from
organised crime as head of New York's biggest Mafia family.
He was dubbed the Teflon Don after twice being acquitted in court but, in
1992, he was convicted of 13 murders and numerous other charges. He died of
throat cancer in prison 10 years later.
Carneglia, 62, has denied racketeering and five murder charges. Prosecutors
claim he was part of a seven-strong hit squad that got rid of the Gambino
clan's enemies.
