Police discovered human remains in a field in the Cotswolds after 47-year-old
Christopher Halliwell, who has been charged with Miss O'Callaghan's murder,
told police of the whereabouts of a body during his interview last month.
Miss Godden, who would have been 29 on Monday, was discovered last week and
was identified through her DNA.
She went missing in 2002 after becoming "disconnected" from her family when
she developed a drug habit, Wiltshire Police said. She was not reported
missing until 2007 when her family reported her disappearance to the National
Missing Person's Helpline.
Miss Godden's mother, Karen Edwards, was searching for Miss Godden online last
year. On the website Missingyou.net, she posted: "Karen Edwards is trying to
trace the location of Becky she has been missing for 8 years, and I need to
contact her urgent or just to know that she is ok! can anyone help? she could
also be in the Bristol area."
Yesterday her family released a short statement which read: "The family is
completely devastated by the news of Becky's death and at this time wish to be
left alone to grieve for our beautiful daughter."

Police sources said that Miss Godden was living a "chaotic lifestyle" when she
disappeared. An article in a local newspaper from 2002 reported she had been
using drugs since the age of 15 and had once robbed a pub after being
threatened by her boyfriend at knifepoint.
She admitted burgling the Trout Inn in Lechlade, Glos, on May 30, 2001, and
stealing 100 packets of cigarettes, £25 in cash and a handbag containing £18.
Her conviction was the reason she was on the DNA database, the means by which
detectives identified her.
Miss Godden, who would have been 29 last Monday, was last seen in 2002 when
she apparently left Swindon. Her family appear to have thought she had either
gone to London or Bristol.
Miss Godden grew up in the Shaw area of Swindon with her mother, father John
and brother Steven. She was living with her mother, a hairdresser, and her
stepfather Charles Edwards, who owns an amusement arcade, in a farmhouse at
the time of her disappearance.
Last night, Miss Godden's grandfather, Morris Brown, 69, a roof tiler, said:
"I am devastated. When I knew her she was a bubbly girl."
David Godden, Rebecca's uncle, who works for the DVLA said from his home in
Normanton, Derbyshire: "She was a nice girl and she might have fallen in with
a bad crowd and gone off the rails.
"She was a beautiful, blonde girl. My brother always hoped that there would be
a reconciliation one day."
A source said the picture of Miss Godden's life before her disappearance was
unclear. "She got into drug abuse and was living a chaotic lifestyle.
"Her family knew that she had drifted into drug abuse. She was a beautiful
girl. It's a crying shame it came to this."
Police were unable to comment on whether she had been working as a prostitute
before her death. They added: "It's an area we're looking into but her family
aren't aware of anything like that."
Miss Godden's remains were found in a shallow grave. Her naked body had been
covered by a thin layer of top soil.
Because of the length of time her body had been in the ground, tests were
unable to establish a cause of death for Miss Godden. But police believe she
was sexually assaulted before her death. Detectives say they will now speak to
Mr Halliwell about Miss Godden's murder.
Mr Halliwell, a taxi driver, has been charged with murdering Miss O'Callaghan,
who disappeared following a night out with friends in Swindon on March 19.
The 22-year-old is believed to have been abducted as she left the Suju
nightclub. Her body was discovered five days later, near the White Horse of
Uffington, Oxfordshire, after Mr Halliwell told detectives where she was
buried.
An inquest showed that she was likely to have died of head injuries.
Miss O'Callaghan was reported missing by her boyfriend, Kevin Reape, 25, who
became concerned when she did not return to the flat they shared in Swindon
and did not reply to his text message.
