# Former cycling champion dies after alleged assault
## A former cycling champion has died after he was allegedly attacked in the
street.
12:28PM GMT 26 Mar 2011
Ray Eden, 42, won the national 100-mile time-trial cycling championship in
1995 at only his second attempt, and represented Great Britain four times in
stage racing.
The powerfully-built athlete was also a keen rower, devoted father and husband
and was described by a colleague as "big-hearted".
Mr Eden was left in a critical condition following an incident near his home
in Scawthorpe, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, at 7.30am on Friday March 18.
He died at Doncaster Royal Infirmary on Monday, having sustained serious head
injuries.
Mr Eden worked for cycle firm Planet X and the firm's joint owner Andy Brookes
told the Sheffield Star on Friday: "Everyone here is absolutely stunned.

"Ray was a big man, 6ft 2 ins tall, 16 stone, and all muscle. But most of all
he was kind and big hearted."
Mr Brookes said his broad-chested friend found he had a talent for cycling
while working as a bike courier in London.
Luke Jolly, 24, of Scawthorpe was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm
before Mr Eden died, and will appear before Doncaster Crown Court again on
Tuesday.
