# Types of care
|

|
|
## With residential care, nursing, specialist dementia care and respite, our
|
|
homes offer a range of specialist services to suit all care needs. Before you
|
|
decide which home is right for you, it's important to check that it offers the
|
|
best type of care you are looking for.

**Residential and Nursing care**
|
|
|
|
Our nursing homes offer the 24-hour personal support and accommodation of a
|
|
residential home with the added benefit of specialist care from qualified
|
|
nurses.
|
|
|
|
Our residential care homes provide accommodation, meals and personal care for
|
|
those who might be finding it difficult to cope at home without help, or who
|
|
perhaps need more help than their carers are able to provide. They do not
|
|
generally provide nursing care for any medical conditions, however, some of
|
|
our homes do specialise in both types of care.
|
|
|
|
**Dementia care**
|
|
|
|
Dementia is caused by the deterioration of brain function, which affects
|
|
memory, concentration, every-day skills and reasoning. There are more than 100
|
|
different types of dementia, the most common being Alzheimer's disease,
|
|
vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.
|
|
|
|
Dementia-related conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease, affect one person in
|
|
20 aged over 65, and one person in three over 95. As well as offering dementia
|
|
care in residential or nursing homes, we have specialist facilities that are
|
|
adapted to the needs of residents, plus a helpful guide on how to care for
|
|
someone with dementia, how it affects their day-to-day life and where you get
|
|
help and support throughout the varying stages of the illness.

**Short stay care**
|
|
|
|
Short-stay care can be in various forms. We offer support to those who need
|
|
convalescence following an accident or illness to help and and encourage a
|
|
return to independent living. Alternatively, respite can offer carers a well-
|
|
deserved break while their loved ones enjoy a temporary stay with the peace of
|
|
mind they're in expert hands.
|
|
|
|
Many of our homes also offer specialist Palliative care (also known as end-of-
|
|
life care) for those with a life threatening illness where recovery is not
|
|
expected. Our carers are trained to deal with the resident holistically to
|
|
ensure their wellbeing is important, whilst controlling pain and other
|
|
symptoms. We aim to provide the best quality of life for both residents and
|
|
their families during a difficult and emotional time.

**Specialist care**
|
|
|
|
Many of our homes offer specialist care for specific conditions or illnesses,
|
|
offering specially trained staff and adapted facilities to provide the best
|
|
care in a homely, comfortable, environment.
|

|
|
Some Bupa care homes offer specialist care for people with mobility-limiting
|
|
conditions including Parkinson's disease, while some homes provide facilities
|
|
and staff provide care and support for those with Huntington's disease or for
|
|
the young physically disabled aged between 18 and 65 years of age with
|
|
physical disabilities who are unable to live in their own homes.
