The Royal British Legion is inviting the nation to join The Great Poppy Party
|
|
Weekend, a three-day summer celebration of the charity's 90th Anniversary
|
|
year, to help raise £1 million for our Armed Forces.
|
|
|
|
Party organisers can get Poppy Party Packs from the Legion, which include all
|
|
the essentials to kick off a great event such as invitation cards, napkins and
|
|
tablecloth as well as a frisbee.
|
|
|
|
The Great Poppy Party Weekend will take place on 10th, 11th and 12th June 2011
|
|
and people nationwide are being encouraged to be as creative as possible with
|
|
their party ideas.
|
|
|
|
There is a £1,000 prize for the most unusual party location, with some
|
|
inventive ideas already planned including a party at the Halley Research
|
|
Centre in Antarctica, the iconic Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth and on top of
|
|
Pen Y Fan Mountain in Wales.
|
|
|
|
**Raising vital funds**
|
|
|
|
The Legion is also asking party organisers to think of imaginative ways of
|
|
raising vital funds to support our Armed Forces family.
|
|
|
|
Whether it's asking people to donate at the entrance or through a raffle, all
|
|
the money raised from the Great Poppy Party Weekend will go towards meeting
|
|
the Legion's overall target of raising £90 million in its 90th Anniversary
|
|
year.
|
|
|
|
The Legion's Director General Chris Simpkins said the charity's work is
|
|
crucial to helping the 'Afghan generation' of the Armed Forces family in its
|
|
90th year.
|
|
|
|
"We have made a £50 million funding commitment to pay for The Royal British
|
|
Legion Battle Back Centre and the operating costs of a wider Personnel
|
|
Recovery Capability for ten years," Mr Simpkins said.
|
|
|
|
"The Battle Back Centre will be a national centre of excellence for activity
|
|
based rehabilitation to help wounded, injured and sick Armed Forces personnel
|
|
regain their fitness and return to duty, or reskill and make a successful
|
|
transition to civilian life. We are honoured to commit £50 million, the
|
|
Legion's biggest single funding commitment in 90 years, towards these
|
|
invaluable projects, which will be conducted in partnership with Help for
|
|
Heroes and the Ministry of Defence."
|
|
|
|
The whole recovery programme will help around 800 wounded, injured and long-
|
|
term sick Service personnel each year between 2011 and 2021.
