# Men's health concerns: fitness and appearance
|
|
|
|
## Recent results of a men's health survey carried out by TENA Men, revealed
|
|
that looking good matters for most men, but only up to a point.

Questions about looks and fitness showed 45-plus men to be comfortable in
|
|
their skins. Asked to choose which famous men they would like to resemble in
|
|
terms of health and appearance, 29 per cent were inspired by former Bond,
|
|
Pierce Brosnan, followed by Steve Redgrave, Paul McCartney, Sting and Tom
|
|
Hanks. Some 53 per cent, though, say they are happy as they are.
|
|
|
|
Two per cent have already enhanced their appearance with cosmetic surgery,
|
|
while a surprising 14 per cent say they would consider it in future, mainly
|
|
out of pride in appearance or for medical reasons. Few of those considering it
|
|
would do so to please or attract a partner.
|
|
|
|
Among those contemplating cosmetic surgery, their main interest is a tummy
|
|
tuck (24 per cent). However, men's interest in health does not extend to
|
|
spending large sums of money on maintaining their health through gym
|
|
membership, a personal trainer or health insurance. Six out of 10 spend less
|
|
than £50 a year on such things.
|
|
|
|
Just under half also pay out less than £50 a year on toiletries and cosmetics
|
|
while only 1 per cent spend more than £300 a year.

|
|
|
|

|
|

|
|
moisturisers.

**A third of respondents worried about their health **
|
|
|
|
• Some 37 per cent were more worried about their health than when younger and
|
|
more than any other source of stress such as money, work and appearance.
|
|
Physical health was considered the biggest concern.
|
|
|
|
• Of those who responded to the survey, around 75 per cent said that they now
|
|
pay more attention to their health than in the past. More than half have
|
|
regular health checks.
|
|
|
|
• Four-fifths felt that sedentary jobs led to more health problems, but,
|
|
compared with their fathers' generation, felt they ate better and were more
|
|
aware of signs of ill health.
