# Men's health concerns: your questions answered
## Read some of the latest questions answered by Dr Hilary Jones.

**Q. I am in my early 50s and starting to think about the dangers of heart
disease. Is there anything you can recommend I do to keep my heart healthy? **
A. It is so important that you begin looking after your heart immediately as
heart disease is actually the biggest killer of men, claiming the lives of one
in five men before they reach the age of 75.
It is important to remember that the heart is a muscle and should be exercised
just like any other part of your body. Getting regular physical exercise is
the best place to start combined with cutting out high fat and sugary foods.
Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol and stress as these are all contributing
factors to heart disease.
**Q. I'm in my early thirties and have an extremely stressful and high
pressured job. I'm worried that I'm not really coping with the stress of work
and am using alcohol on a daily basis to help me unwind and escape from the
pressures of work. **
A. Alcohol is a depressant and if you feel that you're relying on it every
day, long-term it will just exacerbate your problems. Take time to understand
what makes your job so stressful and what you could realistically change to
reduce your stress levels.
We often cause ourselves a great deal of stress because we want people to like
us and don't want to let people down. We then end up doing more than we
should. Learn to delegate effectively and be assertive so that you can say no
without upsetting or offending your colleagues.
Following a healthy diet, exercising regularly and ensuring you get adequate
sleep and rest can also help us cope better with stress should it occur.
**Q. I'm a man in his 50's who is worried about putting on weight. How can I
stay healthy?**
A. As we get older, its even more important to adopt a healthier lifestyle as
it is estimated that 72% of men and women over the age of 50 are overweight.
Firstly - get moving. Muscles weaken with age so you need to take regular
exercise to help strengthen your body - just be sure to check with your GP
first if you have any health conditions, before attempting any exercises.
Try and take 30 minutes of exercise a day at least 3 to 4 times a week and
that can include anything from walking to swimming. And finally, eat healthy -
as we get older our metabolism slows down so make sure you eat your 5 a day,
cut back on processed foods, kick the salt habit and reduce your alcohol
intake.
**Q. I've had an operation for my prostate. The hospital have advised me that
I may have a few leaks, can you recommend anything to help me please? **
A. Firstly, it's important to know that you're not alone. There are currently
one in nine men in the UK experiencing some form of bladder weakness.
There a number of solutions to help manage the condition. Firstly avoid
drinking too much caffeine, alcohol and fizzy drinks as these are diuretics,
which will make you visit the toilet more often.
Speak to your GP about Pelvic floor exercises, these will help strengthen the
pelvic floor over time and in some cases, can lead to a complete recovery.
In the meantime, TENA _Men_ pads are available to allow you to remain active

**Q. I am in my early forties and I am worried that I may have ED. Is this
common at my age?**
A. Erectile dysfunction can occur at any age. It is estimated to occur in
around 1 in 10 men, however, this rises to around a third of men over fifty.
A number of lifestyle factors can affect erectile dysfunction, including
weight, exercise, diet, smoking. Taking positive steps to improve your
physical fitness will help improve the problem.
Please also visit your healthcare professional who will be able to talk you
through various treatment options, which could make a difference.
