# Men's health concerns: Obesity and weight problems
## Have your trousers shrunk or has middle-age spread struck? Obesity is a
growing problem in the UK with important health implications. Find out if you
are at risk here.
12:55PM BST 27 May 2011
Enjoying life and putting on weight as we get older may seem harmless but it
does bring health risks and is a growing problem for us all. The World Health
Organisation says obesity has tripled in its European Region since the 1980s.
Being overweight or obese is measured by the Body Mass Index, relating your
weight to your height. To work it out, divide your weight (in kilograms) by
the square of your height (in metres).
• A BMI of more than 25 is overweight, more than 30 obese, and more than 40
morbidly obese
• Waist measurement is an effective way of assessing whether you are too heavy
• Men with a waist circumference of more than 94 cm (37 inches) have an
increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.

• More than 102 cm (40 inches) indicates a substantial risk to health.
**Symptoms **
There are a range of symptoms associated with being overweight.
• breathlessness
• increased sweating
• snoring
• difficulty sleeping
• inability to cope with sudden physical activity
• feeling very tired
• back and joint pains.
**Solutions**
• Eat a healthy, calorie-controlled or low-fat diet with meals based around
starchy foods such as pasta and potatoes and lots of fresh fruit and
vegetables.
• Eat regular meals and try reducing the size of your portions. A food diary
can help to spot where you are going wrong. Alcohol is high in calories!
• Increase exercise and activity levels. Take a brisk 30 minute walk every
day.
• Set realistic weight loss goals - aim for 5-10 kg (11-22 lbs) over three
months. This is around 0.5kg (1.1 lbs) a week, but reduce this target if it
seems too difficult.
• Slimming clubs are not just for women - try one to see if it works for you.
**When to seek medical advice**
If you are obese, you are at risk of suffering other serious health problems,
such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes. See a
doctor to get them checked out.
There are medications to help you lose weight, and surgery for serious cases.
Doctors are increasingly 'prescribing' exercise, and can encourage a healthy
lifestyle plan specifically for you.
**Information and Support**
It may help to talk to others in the same position or get expert advice. All
these organisations can help.
