# Men's health concerns: Mental health and wellbeing
## Stress and depression can happen at any stage of a man's life, but after
50 there can be some serious life events which may hinder emotional wellbeing.
Check out the symptoms and solutions here.

Worries about impending retirement, financial concerns, children leaving home
and marriage breakdown can cause stress and in some depression.
The good news is that research shows that if you exercise, have a healthy
diet, keep your brain active and take care of yourself, you are less likely to
experience a mental health problem.

**Stress and depression**
Stress is increasingly common in our modern lives, and happens when pressure
is put upon us which we feel we can't cope with. It can cause physical, mental
and emotional problems, including depression.
Although stress is a usual part of life, extreme or prolonged stress can be
harmful and needs treatment.
**Symptoms**
**Acute stress** can cause trembling, hyperventilating, vomiting, and in those
with asthma, an attack.
**Chronic stress** can cause irritability, anger, apathy, anxiety, irrational
behaviour, loss of appetite, comfort eating, lack of concentration, loss of
libido. It can also cause the physical symptoms of excessive tiredness, skin
problems, aches and pains, heart palpitations and feeling sick.
**Depression** can cause continuous sadness, low mood, loss of interest in
life, feelings of hopelessness and difficulty making decisions. Physical
symptoms include lack of energy, changes in appetite and weight and disturbed
sleep.
**Solutions**
There are some simple ways to deal with stress better:
• Take regular exercise - a brisk walk for 30 minutes every day can be a very
effective stress buster, as well as a quick football game with workmates or
grandchildren.
• Set aside some time to organise yourself. Write down lists of things to do
in priority.
• Find some quiet time to listen to music
• Confide in your friends or family - sharing your thoughts and worries can
help.
• Talk to your boss who has a duty to take reasonable steps to resolve work-
related stress.
• Delegate or share your responsibilities at work - don't make yourself
indispensable.
• Say no to work you know you can't do well or shouldn't be your
responsibility.
**When to seek medical advice **
If you have been experiencing some of these symptoms for a long period of
time, you are at risk of developing high blood pressure which can lead to
heart attacks and stroke. Don't suffer alone, talk to a healthcare
professional.
Your doctor can prescribe talking therapy (counselling) or medication to deal
with stress and depression.
**Support and Information**
People who are used to coping may not want to recognise these symptoms. Often
it takes a partner, or a friend to point out that they need to seek help from
a doctor or counsellor, in the form of medication or talking therapy.
It may help to talk to others in the same position or get expert advice. All
these bodies can help.
