# Men's health concerns: Spotting signs of bladder issues
|
|
|
|
## Men can find it hard to talk about their health problems and may sometimes
|
|
deny they are experiencing bladder issues even to themselves.
|
|

Difficulties with going to the toilet are not an inevitable part of a man
|
|
getting older. They are often a sign of an enlarged prostate or something more
|
|
serious so it's vital to persuade men to get them checked out. There are also
|
|
treatments available. Problems you may hear him talk about include:
|
|
|
|
• Difficulty in starting to pass urine
|
|
|
|
• A weak flow of urine that sometimes starts and stops
|
|
|
|
• Dribbling of urine before and after urinating
|
|
|

**Questions to ask yourself**
|
|
|
|
• Does your partner make frequent trips to the bathroom in the night?
|
|
|
|
• Is your social life affected because he needs to be close to a toilet
|
|
|
|
• Has he mentioned he finds it hard to start urinating?
|
|
|
|
• Has your sex life been affected because he worries about needing to go to
|
|
the toilet urgently?
|
|
|
|
• Does he rule out long drives or cinema trips because of worry over needing
|
|
the toilet?
|
|
|
|
• Does he say he still feels he needs to go to the toilet after he's finished?
|
|
|
|
• Does he carry something with him such as a spare jumper to cover up
|
|
'accidents'?
|
|
|
|
• Does he wear extra layers of underwear?
|
|
|
|
• Have you noticed there is a lot of extra clothes that need washing e.g.
|
|
underwear and trousers
|
|
|
|
If your partner suffers symptoms, they need to be seen by a doctor - first to
|
|
rule out prostate cancer or a severe enlarged prostate, which can require
|
|
surgery.
|
|
|
|
If he has these symptoms, he may be diagnosed with an enlarged prostate
|
|
[Benign Prostate Hyperplasia.]
|
|
|
|
There are ways of treating BPH, using medications that reduce the pressure of
|
|
the enlarged prostate. His symptoms may be improved by him taking his
|
|
recommended prescription medications regularly.
|
|
|
|
Managing the condition, with pelvic floor exercises, bladder re-training,
|
|
altering fluid intake (e.g. avoiding tea, coffee and alcohol) and eating a
|
|
high-fibre health diet may also help if he is experiencing bladder problems..
|
|
Persuading him to use absorbency products especially designed for men can be
|
|
liberating for both of you.
