# Exercise little and often
## A few simple tips will ensure that a steady work-out for as little as 30
minutes a day - including brisk walks, housework or gardening - keeps your
muscles supple and contributes to a healthy lifestyle, writes Sally Penfold

Whatever your age it's important to take care of your joints by living a
lifestyle that includes a healthy diet - so as not to overload them and
regular exercise. Aim for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Not only will
this help muscles retain their suppleness, but it will also mean you are less
likely to strain or injure a joint.
Although this may seem ambitious, it's easier to achieve than you think. You
don't have to go to the gym and you don't need to do your 30 minutes all in
one go; shorter, 10-minute bursts are fine. Brisk walking, running, dancing,
housework and gardening all count.
Once you have found an exercise that suits your level and that you enjoy, bear
in mind the following:
Always warm up before you start, slow down towards the end of your session and
stretch afterwards to minimise the build up of lactic acid that can leave you
feeling sore next day.
If you're walking, running or playing a sport, wear appropriate, properly
fitted shoes as this will lessen stress on your joints.
Drink enough water while you're exercising as this helps improve your range of
movement, as well as fending off fatigue.
Exercises that incorporate stretching, such as yoga and Pilates, and gentle
rotational movements, such as arm circles, are useful to maintain flexibility.
As you age it's a good idea to swap high-impact running and squash for low-
impact activities, such as cycling or swimming. Your joints will thank you for
it.
