keep your heart healthy.

The secret to your heart health could be all in the family. Many people are
diagnosed with high cholesterol levels in later life, but some are prone to it
much earlier.
The reason is that their family history makes them much more likely to suffer
from the problem. Everyone can be at risk of heart disease, but if someone you
know has suffered a heart attack at an early age, it may be due to
hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol) which, left untreated, can lead to
heart disease.
The science behind this is well understood nowadays, and there are several
effective solutions. High cholesterol is simple to understand: low-density
lipoprotein (LDL), known as 'bad cholesterol', increases your risk of heart
disease, while high-density lipoprotein (HDL) - 'good cholesterol' - helps
protect you.
A raised level is a total cholesterol count higher than 5 mmol/L, but if your
good cholesterol is high, your total may be higher without increasing your
risk of heart disease.
There are several ways to raise good cholesterol levels and lower the bad. The
simplest is to choose a healthier lifestyle: eat more of the right things
(oily fish, fruit, vegetables, nuts, lean meat) and less of the wrong ones
(saturated fats, butter, sugary and processed foods); exercise more; lose
weight; don't smoke and don't drink to excess.
The next step is to add a cholesterol-lowering food, such as Flora pro.activ,
to your diet. Flora pro.activ products contain plant sterols that work by
partly blocking the absorption of cholesterol from the gut into the blood.
Consuming one Flora pro.activ Mini Health Drink or three portions of Flora
pro.activ spreads per day provides the optimum amount of plant sterols, and
can reduce your bad cholesterol by 10 per cent*. This can be increased to 15
per cent when accompanied by a healthier diet and lifestyle.
And, of course, it is important to keep including Flora pro.activ products in
your daily diet to maintain your new lower cholesterol level.
If your cholesterol is very high, or you suffer from the genetic disorder
familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), your doctor may prescribe cholesterol-
lowering drugs such as statins. Flora pro.activ products can safely be taken
together with statins to produce an additional cholesterol-lowering effect.
There's another effect you'll get from the right diet, healthy exercise and
lowering your cholesterol: you'll feel much better - and your heart will thank
you for it. It really is that simple.
**Why Flora pro.activ works **
Flora pro.activ foods contain plant sterols, which are clinically proven to
lower bad cholesterol by up to 10 per cent*, and a further five per cent with
a healthy diet and lifestyle.
They can form a valuable part of your heart health regime, along with diet and
exercise.
If you are using cholesterol-lowering medication, such as statins, always ask
your GP whether Flora pro.activ foods are suitable for you.
They may not be appropriate for pregnant and breastfeeding women or children.
**Plant sterols: the facts**
Sterols occur naturally in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, grain products, fruit
and vegetables, and many other plant sources.
Plant sterols actively remove cholesterol from the body by partly blocking the
absorption of cholesterol in the gut.
Cholesterol that isn't absorbed is then removed from the body, resulting in a
lowering of total and bad (LDL) cholesterol levels.
Flora pro.activ foods contain concentrated amounts of plant sterols -- though
sterols do occur in healthy foods, they're in such small quantities that you
would need to eat 150 apples, 210 carrots or 425 tomatoes to get the same
amount as one Flora pro.activ Mini Health Drink, or three portions of Flora
pro.activ spreads per day.
**Cholesterol numbers **
* Keep your total cholesterol below 5
* Keep bad cholesterol under 3
* Keep good cholesterol above 1
* Consuming 1.5-2.4g of sterols per day can lower cholesterol by 7-10 per cent
in 2-3 weeks.
