It's always easier to do the things you keep putting off when you're doing
them with other people who are trying to reach the same goal. This way you can
all encourage one another, share stories of how you're getting on and boost
other people's confidence if they are having problems keeping motivated and
carrying on.
One of the things that many people put off but really should get around to is
having their cholesterol tested. More than 50 per cent of adults have a total
cholesterol level greater than 5mmol/l, which is the level we should be aiming
to get below, but many of us don't know it.
To make the most of group support and encouragement, Flora pro.activ has
rounded up a crowd of people who have volunteered to have their cholesterol
tested, and who will spend four weeks consuming some of the products from the
Flora pro.activ range to evaluate the difference in their cholesterol levels.
Just 2 to 2.5g of plant sterols - the active cholesterol-lowering ingredient
in Flora pro.activ -- taken each day, can lower bad cholesterol by 10 per
cent*, which can increase to 15 per cent when combined with a healthy diet and
lifestyle.
This is the amount in three portions of Flora pro.activ spreads or in only one
Flora pro.activ Mini Health Drink, which can provide the recommended daily
amount in one go.
We've chosen four people from the Flora pro.activ pro.activists and we will
follow their progress as they consume Flora pro.activ. This week, an initial
test is done so that we can monitor any changes over a month.
Their cholesterol tests gave the results in the form of the amount of
cholesterol per litre of blood, in mmol/ L. To understand what this means, you
should really aim to keep your total cholesterol under 5, with a bad (LDL)
cholesterol under 3 and good (HDL) cholesterol level above 1.
**Essential information **
Flora pro.activ foods contain plant sterols, which are clinically proven to
significantly lower bad (LDL) cholesterol by 10 per cent and a further 5 per
cent when moving to a healthy diet and lifestyle.*
In fact, more than 40 studies to date have shown that Flora pro.activ foods
actively lower cholesterol.
The range consists of Flora pro.activ spreads -- in Light, Buttery and Olive
varieties, along with Mini Health Drinks.
When used in the correct quantities every day (three servings of spread --one
serving is around two teaspoons -- or one Mini Health Drink a day with food),
they will form a valuable part of your heart health regime, along with diet
and exercise.
Flora pro.activ is perfect as it is easy to use every day and fits into a
healthy diet and lifestyle to lower your cholesterol, and it also works if
you're using cholesterol- lowering medication, such as statins.**

**Initial cholesterol test results**
Overall 6.07
HDL 1.19
Mike, 63, has been diagnosed with high cholesterol so he's already tackling it
by taking medication, losing weight, switching to a healthier diet and using
Flora pro.activ foods.
"I've reduced my weight from 15 stone to 13 stone," he says, "and I'm aiming
for 12 stone. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and oily fish several times
a week. I've cut down on red meat, too. I calorie count and take a walk before
lunch. And I have one Flora pro.activ Mini Health Drink at breakfast, to get
the recommended daily amount in one 'hit'."
**Cheryl Marcher **
Flora pro.activist (on statins)
**Initial cholesterol test results**
Overall 4.02
HDL 2.01
Cheryl, 62, has a family history of heart disease, and had a heart bypass
eight years ago. Now, she's doing Tai Chi and walking, and wants to lower her
cholesterol further.
"I was only 53 when I had heart problems," she says. "I didn't smoke or drink,
so no one thought I could have anything 'hearty' wrong -- but my cholesterol
and blood pressure were high, so I have been prescribed statins by my doctor,
and use Flora pro.activ foods to lower my cholesterol levels further. It is
vital to get your cholesterol checked, and if it is high, to tackle it."
**Ian Raybould**
Flora pro.activist
**Initial cholesterol test results**
Overall 6.27
HDL 1.51
Ian, 58, retired five years ago, but his hobbies keep him busy, including
photography, walking and riding his motorcycle.
Like many men, he's not one to go to his GP unless there's something wrong.
But taking preventive steps about his cholesterol seemed a wise move. "My high
cholesterol levels were a bit of a shock," he says. "Now, I'm aiming, through
medication, to get them down to a point where I don't need medical help.
"I'm using Flora pro.activ spread three times a day and waiting for the four-
week check to see how I'm doing."
**Ann Blackburn**
Flora pro.activist
**Initial cholesterol test results **
Overall 6.14
HDL 2.59
Ann, 49, is an enthusiastic supporter of causes such as Fairtrade foods and
animal charities. She's a keen genealogist too, having researched her family
tree. But there's a bit of a skeleton in her own cupboard.
"I adore cake and pudding!" she says.
"However, I am aware of the potential health problems that can result from
high cholesterol levels.
"I really like the idea that using Flora pro.activ isn't just an avoidance of
the bad fats; it actually actively promotes the removal of past sins!"
