Time for tea: Gloria, centre, Jayne, left, and Sheila enjoy tea in the library
11:38AM BST 23 May 2011
'It looks very tempting but I'm going to stick to the sandwiches,' says Gloria
Hunniford, eyeing a neatly stacked cake stand filled with teacakes, scones and
colourful macaroons.
Dressed in a polka-dot dress and cream jacket, Gloria is taking tea in the
cosy library at the Charlotte Street Hotel, London, with two of Flora's most
dedicated pro.activists, Sheila Robson and Jayne Pickard. The two Yorkshire
ladies have journeyed to the capital to meet the veteran broadcaster and share
their story as a reward for the success they've had in reducing their
cholesterol and spreading the message.
Gloria Hunniford switched to Flora pro.activ four years ago when she took a
cholesterol test and discovered her level was high - any score more than five
is cause for concern.
'I was surprised because I've always been reasonably health- conscious, but
raised cholesterol can be a problem. There are no obvious symptoms. I agreed
to give Flora pro.activ a try, and used the drinks - you only have to have one
mini drink a day to get the recommended daily amount, or you could use the
spread, which is just two teaspoons, three times a day - actually, these
sandwiches here, have the spread in. I also upped my exercise with the drink
and my cholesterol dropped to 5.2.
'It was really instructive for me. I was aware of heart issues because my
husband had suffered a heart attack. He had altered his diet, but his test
result was high,' says Gloria. 'He also took Flora pro.activ, containing plant
sterols, with me, and saw his level drop, too, to 4.2.*'
Gloria's experience is typical of most people's: it's a complete surprise to
discover your cholesterol is high. Sheila, 59, a mother-of-two from York, had
no idea.
'I came across the subject while I was on the internet,' she says, cradling
her tea cup. 'It struck a chord because my husband had brought it up just a
few days before. We had our cholesterol tested and we were astounded to find
we were both relatively high. It seems silly you don't know about something as
important as this but there are no signs, so you don't give it any thought.'
'And the thing about you, Sheila,' interjects Gloria, 'is that no one could
guess you had high cholesterol. You're very trim. You look like you do
everything right. You don't overeat, do you?'
'No, I don't,' agrees Sheila. 'That's why I was so surprised.'
Sheila started using Flora pro.activ spread and made rapid strides in lowering
her cholesterol.
'I just used the spreads instead of butter. It was easy. My result is still
going down, and I plan to keep on using them. I wouldn't dream of stopping
now.'
Jayne, 51, a housewife from Howarth, was also alarmed to find she had high
cholesterol.
'I investigated my family's health history, which suggested I might have high
cholesterol and this was a wake-up call. So I went to have my cholesterol
tested and it confirmed it was above a healthy level. I'm not as active as I
could be, I have back problems, so it was no surprise.
'I opted for the Flora pro.activ mini drinks - raspberry and pomegranate
flavour is my favourite. It tastes lovely; I have it with my main meal. I also
cut down on red meat and increased my exercise - I make sure I walk the dog
twice a day and my cholesterol level has now dropped to 5.2.'
Like Gloria, Sheila and Jayne are now spreading the message about the benefits
of Flora pro.activ.
'Friends keep asking me why I was going to London to have tea with Gloria and
I tell them, "Because of cholesterol,"' says Sheila, refilling her cup. 'I'm
spreading the news to everyone at work and all my friends and family. And when
they ask, "Does it really work?" I can tell them honestly, "Yes, it does."'
'I'm a big fan of Gloria. So it was a bonus for me to find she was involved,'
says Jayne. 'Now, I'm telling everyone about it.'
'Meeting Jayne and Sheila brings the facts to life,' Gloria nods. 'You can see
it working for real and making a difference. When I say my level has dropped
so many people assume it's a set up because I'm on TV, but it's not, and these
women are proof of that.
'There's a fact I found about the plant sterols** used in Flora pro.activ
products. They have been shown to reduce cholesterol, but you'd have to eat
420 tomatoes, or 150 apples or 210 carrots to get the amount of plant sterols
in one little pro.activ drink or three portions of spread, so that shows the
convenience of it.'
Finally, she relents and reaches for a scone. 'I think I can indulge in one of
these if the spread's Flora pro.activ. The whole point is if you choose
carefully, you can still have a treat.'
Sheila and Jayne tuck in, too, celebrating their lower cholesterol and better
heart health.
_***As heart disease has multiple risk factors, you may need to improve more
than one to reduce your overall risk. **_
_****The plant sterols in Flora pro.activ can lower cholesterol in three weeks
by 7-10 per cent. The effect can increase to 15 per cent by moving to a
healthy diet and lifestyle.**_
