# Natural ways to be healthy
## Find ways that nature can make you feel better, from the positive power of
gardening to exercising outdoors and drinking herbal teas.

Feeling good: outdoor exercising
2:53PM BST 05 May 2011
### How to relax naturally
### Be present
Being mindful of your body, feelings and surroundings in the moment helps calm
the body from the adrenalinfuelled 'fight or flight' response that occurs when
you're stressed.
### Watch your diet
If you tend toward sugar cravings when under pressure, increasing your intake
of quality protein such as organic meats and eggs, as well as good fats such
as avocado, olive oil and walnuts can help.
### Hydrate
It's easy to forget to drink enough fluid. Water is a natural hydrator and
essential for body and skin. Try liquorice tea, a great source of natural
energy and a substitute for coffee.

### Natural ways to be healthy
### 1 Gardening
The positive power of gardening on mood has been documented in scientific
trials. In March, researchers at Texas State University found that gardeners
had higher levels of satisfaction than non-gardeners. Whether a green-fingered
pro or a novice, get advice at thrive.org.uk, a website dedicated to gardening
for health and emotional wellbeing. Request a leaflet such as Harnessing The
Mood-Boosting Power of Gardening from the site or call 0118 988 5688. If you
don't have a garden, try Green Gym, a nationwide charity running outdoor
projects. Find one near you at [**www2.btcv.org.uk/display/greengym**][8]
### 2 Outdoor exercise
A study at the University of Essex found three quarters of outdoor exercisers
tested felt less angry, depressed or tense, compared with only half who worked
out in a gym. Plus, the same team has also found that only five minutes being
in nature can impact mood positively. Try Walk Watch, an outdoor walking app
which features a GPS and walking diary plus distance covered and calories
burned £1.19 from iTunes.
### 3 Slow breathing
Oxygen is available to us any time, anywhere. Long, slow breathing doesn't
have to involve hours of meditation, in less than a minute it can help bring
calm to anxious nerves. In fact, a study in medical journal The Lancet found
that taking six deep breaths in 30 seconds can reduce blood pressure
temporarily. Wherever you are, sit quietly and breathe in for a count of four,
then gently exhale for four. Repeat for up to three minutes until you feel
calmer.
### 4 Fresh blooms
According to research at Rutgers University receiving flowers increases
happiness, with sunflowers, lilacs and irises having the greatest impact. The
same team found that seeing flowers could improve recent memory in the elderly.
### 5 Herbal help
Drinking adequate water can help keep energy levels stable. Herbal teas count
towards your daily intake. Try peppermint to aid digestion, chamomile for
relaxation and cinnamon in place of coffee. For a nutritious change to water,
especially during exercise, try coconut water which contains electrolytes lost
through sweat. Try Vita Coco from health stores.
### TRY RUNNING OUTDOORS
**Break it down**
Begin by walking for four minutes, jogging for one minute, walking for another
four, jogging for one minute, and keep going for total of 20-30 minutes.
**Build it up slowly**
Gradually lessen the time spent walking by one minute and increase the time
spent running by one minute each week.
**Be consistent**
It's more beneficial to do a 20-minute walk or run three times a week than jog
for a long distance once a week.
**Make it sociable**
Once you've got into your stride, run with other people to motivate you. Try
the website [**runningpartners.org.uk**][9] that aims to match you with
runners of a similar level in your area.
### NATURAL SCENTS
Smell affects people emotionally, because scents are carried directly to the
limbic system, which acts like an emotional switchboard for the brain.
Fragrances can help reduce stress and relax or invigorate and energise. Try
burning essential oils, adding a few drops to the bath or mixing them with a
'carrier oil' such as jojoba for massage. Here's a guide:

**Eucalyptus, lemon - for concentration**

**Lavender, chamomile, sandalwood, marjoram - for relaxation**

**Cinnamon, peppermint, clove - for energy **

**Rose, geranium, bergamot - for happiness**
