Juggling writing, filming TV programmes, teaching yoga and seeing nutrition
clients with looking after her toddler means no two days are the same for
Charlotte Watts. She says: 'I have lots of things to do and not much time to
relax. As a result, I am well qualified to advise stressed people! I've
learned through trial and error what natural remedies help to keep busy people
calm.'
There's no faster natural stress reliever than checking in with your breath.
Charlotte recommends taking a slow inhalation and a longer exhalation to
instantly calm -- as lengthening the out breath quickly releases tension in
the muscles and the nervous system.
Getting outdoors is a great mood booster and walking everywhere with Maisie in
the stroller is Charlotte's daily exercise. She tries to clock up two miles
every day because it is more calming than running, which can increase stress
hormones.
'I must be the only person without an iPod blaring as I walk,' observes
Charlotte. 'I prefer to hear the birdsong. Walking through a park and
listening to the subtleties of my surroundings complete with dogs barking,
wind blowing, even other people's conversations makes me feel connected to
nature.
'My love of nature was cultivated by my dad who notices everything from when
flowers are in bud to the changing of the seasons. I'm keen to pass that on to
Maisie. Already she loves feeling the textures of flowers, running on the
grass and gets so excited at seeing birds and animals.

'About 15 minutes of yoga daily is often all I can manage to fit in around
looking after Maisie and work. But the beauty of yoga is that just a little a
day can give your body what it needs.
Sometimes, I am so tired I simply lie down with my legs up the wall. This pose
is incredibly relaxing, and feels like every limb is falling into the floor --
you can feel the tension melting away. It increases circulation and is a great
way to renew your energy when you haven't got time for a proper rest.'
Charlotte also has some natural must-have items in her first-aid kit. 'I love
tea tree oil, which I use neat, along with a dab of honey, on cuts or spots
for its powerful natural antibacterial qualities.
'I keep my diet as natural as possible and aim to eat the way our ancestors
ate, with plenty of lean protein, different coloured vegetables and good fats
such as nuts, olive oil and avocado. I also try to eat with the seasons which
means I can eat more produce that is grown locally, which often means it's
fresher than food that has had to travel long distances.'
