# Eden Project gardeners wassail in Eden's orchard
## Every autumn, our gardeners hold a ceremony to scare off evil spirits and
protect the Eden Project's orchard.

Today our gardeners are up to important business in the Eden orchard;
wassailing, to ward away evil spirits from the apple trees and ensure a good
harvest this autumn.
Every year on 17 January, the ancient rite sees the team toasting bread on a
bonfire, steeping it in cider and hanging it on the bare branches of a tree.
After this offering to the good spirits, the team sings a traditional
wassailing song around the tree and then makes a lot of noise to scare away
the bad ones (farmers used to fire guns but here we use party poppers).
The trees could certainly do with some extra protection this year as we've had
a few visits from the rabbits recently, who adore the bark.
We've planted the Eden orchard, on the perimeter of the site, with as many
Cornish and South West apple varieties as we could, including the
fantastically named Pendragon, Cornish Aromatic and Captain Broad - many of
which went into today's spiced cider. Hic…

These have swollen bases that contain tunnels in which ants live. In return,
the ants protect the plant from grazers and pests, but this also chases
pollinators away, forcing the plant to self pollinate.
