# Smart ways to save energy
|
|
|
|
## At B&Q you can find plenty of eco-friendly solutions that are simple and
|
|
cheap, says Kathryn Saville.

Next week, we catch up with our three volunteer home owners -- Tom, Jan and
|
|
Charlotte -- to find out how B&Q's expert eco advice has changed their lives.
|
|
In the meantime, here are some of the products they're using to save energy
|
|
and money.
|
|
|
|
Do you sometimes forget to turn off every appliance? It's easily done -- but
|
|
now there's a handy gizmo to help. The Masterplug 5 socket intelligent energy
|
|
saving power centre (£25.58) does the remembering for you. Just plug your TV
|
|
or computer into the master socket and your speakers, DVD player, printers and
|
|
so on into the slave sockets. Then, when you switch off the main appliance,
|
|
the others will be switched off too.
|
|
|
|
It's good for your conscience plus avoiding standby can cut your energy bills
|
|
by up to £40 per year*. You can also get remote control sockets for hard-to-
|
|
reach plugs.
|
|
|
|
Fitting energy-saving light bulbs (B&Q Energy Saving 9W bulb, £2.48) is
|
|
probably one of the easiest ways to do your bit for the environment. On
|
|
average each bulb will save you around £2.50 a year in electricity alone*.
|
|
Compact fluorescent light bulbs last around 10 years and LED light bulbs can
|
|
last 25 years.
|
|
|
|
Finally, apply radiator reflective foil (£9.98 for a 500mm x 5m roll), so that
|
|
more of your radiators' heat goes into the room instead of being wasted
|
|
through external walls. It can be fitted without removing the radiator and
|
|
makes a big difference to how cosy a room feels.
