# How to put an end to winter worries with B&Q
|
|
|
|
## These clever gadgets from B&Q will keep the cold out and the heat in, says
|

Kathryn Saville.

Last week, our three willing home owners, Tom, Jan and Charlotte, received
|
|
their detailed 14-page energy-saving surveys from B&Q's eco expert Spencer
|
|
Barrett and started to implement his recommendations.

As our volunteers discovered, there are plenty of helpful products in-store at
|
|
B&Q right now -- and you can get advice from eco experts too.
|
|
|
|
One item that B&Q would recommend for every home is the OWL electricity
|
|
monitor (£34.98, left), which shows you how much electricity you're using and
|
|
how much it costs.
|
|
|
|
This will definitely help you remember to switch off lights when you're not in
|
|
a room, stop over-filling the kettle and avoid using standby on your
|
|
television and computers.
|
|
|
|
About 26 per cent of your home's heat can be lost through the roof, so it
|
|
makes sense to insulate it, especially before it gets really cold.
|
|
|
|
Many people think they're already covered in this area but old insulating
|
|
products are now thought to be insufficient. The recommended depth of
|
|
insulation is 270mm, which usually means one layer between the joists and
|
|
another over them.
|
|
|
|
Topping up insulation can save the average household £45 every year.*
|
|
|
|
B&Q's saver value loft roll (above) is a really economical way of achieving
|
|
this saving. Until November 27 you can buy a triple pack for just £3; if you
|
|
have an average-sized house you will need just nine triple packs to top up
|
|
your loft -- that's a total bill of £27. It's easy to install too, as each
|
|
roll is pre-cut.
|
|
|
|
Sometimes it's the most obvious places that we forget to check for energy
|
|
leaks.
|
|
|
|
It's easy to remember windows, for example, but what about external doors? The
|
|
rule of thumb is that if you can feel a cold draught inside, then heat is
|
|
escaping from your home.
|
|
|
|
Stormguard rubber "P" profile weather strip (£5.98, below) is simplicity
|
|
itself to fit around any doorframe and, combined with a letterbox seal (£7.98)
|
|
and keyhole cover (£5.48), it will make your hallway feel so much cosier.
|
|
|
|
And if you need any further incentive, bear in mind that draughtproofing doors
|
|
and windows can save you around £25 from your heating bills every year.
|
|
|
|
