Facebook today updated its Apps on the iPhone and Android platforms to include
"Groups" functions, brought "Places" to the Android mobile platform in the UK
and announced that American users who check in to specific shops will get
"deals", including free clothing from Gap and donations to charity from
MacDonalds.
Facebook's Head of Mobile, Henri Mossinac, said the strategy reflected a bid
to make the mobile web a more social experience, and also announced that the
social network had 200 million active mobile users. They were far more engaged
with the site than their 500 million desktop counterparts, he added.
The updated apps are available now to download via the iPhone and Android app
stores. The Apple version gets groups functions added and already has
"Places". The Android app gets both groups and "Places" added at the same time
and American users will now see deals when they check in to specific outlets.
Gap is offering the first 10,000 customers to check in a free pair of jeans,
and then subsequent visitors 40% off, Mr Mossinac said. MacDonalds will donate
$1 to its foundation for each user who checks in at a restaurant.
Check-in deals will be launched in the UK shortly, although no announcement is
imminent. When the Places function was launched in America, it followed in the
UK six weeks later.
An updated SDK is also being used for developers, including Places Deals and
in-app log-in improvements.
