# Did Ken Clarke fall asleep during Budget speech?

The bookmaker Ladbrokes confirmed that it has paid out after television
footage and Ed Miliband both indicated that the Justice Secretary had nodded
off during George Osborne's announcement.
The Labour leader said the Chancellor's growth strategy had proved too much
for 70-year-old Mr Clarke and had sent him to sleep.
A Conservative official denied he had dropped off but Ladbrokes still paid out
a four figure sum to around 50 punters at 16/1 odds.
"Ed says he caught Ken napping, which is good enough evidence for us," said a
spokesman.
"We've paid out and we congratulate those who had the foresight to be on him."

A spokesman for Mr Clarke dismissed the allegation, saying: "Of course he
didn't fall asleep."
During his speech, Mr Miliband said Labour would look at the Budget's measures
to support growth.
But he added: "There is little reason that they will make the difference to
growth we need.
"Indeed the Justice Secretary fell asleep during the Chancellor's speech, his
growth strategy was so compelling."
Mr Clarke sat on the Government front bench while Mr Osborne delivered his
56-minute Budget statement.
