**Halo 3 is arguably the finest video game that has been released this year,

One of the most eagerly anticipated video games of all time, Halo 3 arrives
positively creaking under the weight of its own hype. There will be fans - and
bemused onlookers - who will posit that Halo 3 can't possibly live up to the
fanfare surrounding it.
It's true that, initially, Halo 3 doesn't seem that much different from the
second instalment of the series; it has a campaign mode, a multiplayer mode
and an online co-op mode. However, scratch the surface and one uncovers a
treasure trove of additional features, which ensure compulsive replay value.
Taken as a complete package, Halo 3 is arguably the finest video game to be
released this year. The campaign mode starts exactly where Halo 2's cliff-
hanger ending left off, with Master Chief returning to Earth to "finish the
fight" against the alien Covenant forces and the parasitic Flood. (For anyone
who didn't play the first two instalments, all you need to know about the
story so far [is on wikipedia][3].
Structurally, the campaign is very similar to the first two Halo games; much
of the game consists of first-person shooter (FPS) "run-and-gun" action, with
some lengthy segments involving vehicles thrown in for good measure. Up to
four players can play through the campaign, either on the same console or on
Xbox live.

Fans will also be pleased to hear that Halo 3 wraps up the trilogy quite
neatly. The game really comes into its own in the multiplayer and online co-op
modes, and in a way, the campaign mode is a great way to introduce players to
their new arsenal ahead of competing against opponents around the world. Aside
from getting to grips with new weapons and new vehicles, players also have
access to an array of deployable equipment (such as the Gravity Lift or the
Bubble Shield), which offer the more strategically minded an edge in battle.
In the online mode, up to 16 players can take part in contests over 11
different maps in a plethora of different battle types, which are all
customisable. A new addition is the match moderation feature known as The
Forge, which allows players to move objects around the different levels in
real time, as well as spawn weapons and vehicles.
The game also offers players the ability to save and edit video clips from
their battles. Camera perspective in this theatre mode isn't fixed, so players
can relive their online victories (and losses) from every possible angle. On
top of this, the file-sharing option allows players to share these clips, as
well as screenshots and Forge creations with the online community.
Game-play aside, nearly everything about Halo 3's in-game experience is almost
cinematic in quality. The music score, sound effects and voice acting are all
superb. The graphics are well rendered and best of all the frame-rate doesn't
slow an inch during the action.
Halo 3 does contain its fair share of niggles but on the whole, this game is
one of the best FPS around and crosses into the "essential" category
effortlessly. Fans should prepare themselves for some long, sleepless nights
in front of their Xbox 360 consoles.
