## Ex-President Hosni Mubarak is sick and has fainted on at least one
occasion at the Red Sea holiday villa where he has been sent into internal
exile, according to sources close to his entourage.

Mr Mubarak has been said before to have been treated for cancer, which he has
always denied. But yesterday locals in Sharm-el-Sheikh said they had been told
by his police guards that he was lying bedbound and needed help in walking.
Many locals sympathised with the former dictator. "Mubarak is very sick - they
say he has cancer," said Ahmed, a teacher.
Their accounts tallied with reports by well-placed sources who had been in
contact with Mr Mubarak's advisers, several of whom are understood to be with
him.
Sameh Shoukry, Egypt's ambassador to Washington, said that he had been
informed that the president's health had taken a turn for the worse.
"I am following the rumors and the press reports related to his health, and
might have received some communication at a personal level indicating that he
is possibly in somewhat of bad health," he said.

But he stressed that "I really don't have sufficient information so I wouldn't
like to speculate" on what, if anything, might be ailing Mubarak.
The Egyptian daily Masry al-Youm reported that Mr Mubarak had slipped into a
coma. That was denied by a pro-government newspaper, but it said Mr Mubarak
was "in a severe psychological condition and is declining treatment, despite
his illness".
Mr Mubarak is staying at a villa in the grounds of the Maritim Jollie Ville
Hotel, which is owned by one of Egypt's leading businessmen, Hussein Salem,
who is a close member of the ex-president's inner circle.
The driveway through the neatly manicured grounds and palm trees was yesterday
lined with barricades and guarded by five uniformed police and six plain-
clothes security.
Staff members confirmed that Mr Mubarak was in residence.
A separate, armed security detail could be seen guarding the presidential
villa.
Mr Mubarak has been treated on a number of occasions in Germany, most recently
to have his gall bladder removed last year.
William Hague, the foreign secretary, meanwhile told the House of Commons that
the government had received a request from Egypt to freeze the assets of
former officials.
"We will of course co-operate with this request, working with EU and
international partners as we have done in the case of Tunisia," he said. "If
there is any evidence of illegality or misuse of state assets we will take
firm and prompt action.
