# David Beckham fitness key to Tottenham Hotspur deal
|

|
## David Beckham will meet Tottenham's medical staff on Monday to assess his
|
|
fitness and will then report for training on Tuesday.

A deal to sign the former England captain on loan has yet to be ratified in
|
|
time for the 35 year-old to face his former club, Manchester United, on
|
|
Sunday, but both parties remain hopeful an agreement can be done inside the
|
|
January transfer window.
|
|
|
|
Beckham, who has previously trained with Tottenham's north London rivals
|
|
Arsenal, said: "It's important that I maintain a high level of fitness during
|
|
the MLS off season. I'm thankful to Tottenham and Harry Redknapp for giving me
|
|
the opportunity to train with the team over the next month. I'm grateful to
|
|
the LA Galaxy for allowing to me to train with Spurs. I look forward to
|
|
getting to work as soon as possible."
|
|
|
|
Several issues appeared to be threatening the move for Beckham to join Spurs
|
|
in the window, chief among them the starting point for his return to his
|
|
roots.
|
|
|
|
Beckham has been recovering from a serious injury sustained while on a similar
|
|
loan at AC Milan last season and Galaxy were initially reluctant to
|
|
countenance another return to Europe.
|
|
|
|
Suggestions that there was a problem with the insurance payments to cover
|
|
Beckham's time in the Premier League are false; when he moved to Italy Beckham
|
|
paid his own insurance and that is likely to happen if he can agree a deal to
|
|
join a club for whom he spent a brief spell as a young teenager, at the club's
|
|
academy.

Following Sunday's 3-0 win over Charlton, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp
|
|
responded to a question asking if the world's most famous player could be soon
|
|
wearing the white of Spurs by saying: "I don't know. I don't honestly know.
|
|
That's being done above my head. Hopefully it could still happen. "
|
|
|
|
When Redknapp was asked whether the hold up was related to insurance payments,
|
|
he added: "That's what I was led to believe, but apparently that's not the
|
|
case."
|
|
|
|
Instead, it is believed that Spurs were reluctant to sign a player immediately
|
|
and pay his wages, understood to be a relatively modest £80,000 a week, unsure
|
|
when his match fitness would be sufficient to the high levels required to play
|
|
in the today's Premier League.
|
|
|
|
A Tottenham statement had earlier said that Beckham would train, but not play,
|
|
for Spurs until Feb 10, when he would return to LA Galaxy ahead of the start
|
|
of the MLS season.
|
|
|
|
However, Spurs remain keen he can still sign and feature in up to a dozen
|
|
Premier League and Champions League games. They would prefer the former United
|
|
player to extend his stay in England until mid-March if an agreement with
|
|
Galaxy can be reached.
|
|
|
|
Galaxy's first game is on March 15 and the Americans may consider Beckham
|
|
would be better off playing in one of the toughest leagues in the world rather
|
|
than attending a limited training camp. However, they would expect to be
|
|
suitably recompensed financially by Spurs.
|
|
|
|
Beckham ruptured his Achilles playing for AC Milan in March and underwent
|
|
surgery, in Finland, ruling him out of England's World Cup campaign. He has
|
|
not played a competitive game since and so Spurs want to be certain the player
|
|
can regain his old form.
|
|
|
|
The 115-times capped player wants to extend his international career and an
|
|
impressive spell at Spurs could prompt England manager Fabio Capello to reopen
|
|
the door to aid Beckham's attempts to break Peter Shilton's 125-cap record.
