# Premier League clubs may find January transfer window does not open quite so
wide this year
## The January transfer window opens this weekend, and as one Premier League
club chairman put it: "It's like a crossword puzzle, we don't want to put in
one wrong answer as it impacts on everything else."

In other words, if one deal is done it may prevent another from happening -
and how long do you hold off going for your second-choice target in a problem
position, and someone who can be easily signed, in the hope of still securing
the player you are really after?
There are several other issues to ponder - the reduction in squad size to 25
players, which means some have to be moved on if others are signed, the
tightness of the league this season with so many clubs facing a relegation
battle and the discussions being held at several of those clubs as to whether
they should stick with their manager or sack him. Stick or twist?
Most interesting of all is the expected collapse of the loan market which,
traditionally, had been the most obvious place for clubs to try to bolster
their squads at this time of year. After all, if their Premier League status
is in doubt, why would a club risk making a potentially ruinously expensive
permanent signing?
But the tightness of the league has also led to another factor - clubs are far
less likely to loan within the Premier League because of how close things are.
Do they really want to strengthen their rivals?
The stance being taken by [**Manchester City**][7] appears to sum up the
attitude of several leading clubs. It had been assumed that City would be keen
to loan out a number of their highly-paid players who are not close to the
first-team - players such as Wayne Bridge and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Except that City are taking a hard line with clubs who had hoped the departure
of Craig Bellamy - on loan to Cardiff, with his wages being subsidised - would
set the model. Instead, City are ideally looking for permanent deals this
month with 100 per cent of the player's wages covered - so that's £90,000 a
week in the case of Bridge and close to £180,000 a week for Emmanuel Adebayor.
That situation may change if there are no takers, especially if City land a
defender such as David Luiz as well as striker Edin Dzeko, but, for now, it
means that the market might be quieter than expected. It could be a moribund
month, or panic could take over with cash being splashed. Maybe it needs
someone to take an expensive early gamble to get things rolling.
**SPURS NAME PRICE FOR KEANE **
[**West Ham United**][13], who last week were stunned by demands of a £1
million bonus for Robbie Keane should the striker help them avoid relegation,
have again moved towards signing the 30 year-old from Tottenham Hotspur only
to be stunned by another stipulation.
Keane is paid £65,000 a week at White Hart Lane and West Ham have agreed to
match these wage demands as they desperately search for a goalscorer. They
face competition from Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City
for Keane, who wants to secure a permanent move, with Spurs demanding £6
million in a transfer fee.
Now Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, known to be one of the most uncompromising
dealmakers in the Premier League, has said clubs wanting to take Keane will
have to pay a hefty 'loan' fee of no less than £2 million.
**PORTO'S MAN CATCHES EYE**
They called him "Mini-Mourinho" or "The Scout" at Stamford Bridge during his
time there working with Jose Mourinho, but Andre Villas Boas is quickly
emerging from the shadows of the 'Special One'.
Just 33, it's no exaggeration to say he is the rising star of European
football - so much so that this week Porto tied him down to a new, extended
contract, only six months after he took over as coach.
Porto, who won the Champions League under Mourinho, are unbeaten in 26 games
this season in all competitions. They lead the Portuguese league by eight
points and are in the last 32 of the Europa League, with five wins and a draw.
Given that Villas Boas speaks excellent English, it is only a matter of time
before a Premier League club comes calling. His name has already been
discussed.
**FERGIE'S PRESTON FAVOURS AT AN END**
Dec 29: Preston North End, bottom of then Championship, sack Darren Ferguson
as their manager after less than a year in charge.
Dec 30: [**Manchester United**][14] recall two of their players, Joshua King
and Ritchie de Laet, from their loan spells at Deepdale. Both deals were not
due to expire until after the Bank Holiday double-header against Derby County
and Crystal Palace.
Suffice to say that Preston will not be expecting any more United players to
be loaned to them by Sir Alex Ferguson after getting rid of his son.
